Have A Reason
- Brian Hawkins | June 20, 2008
Dont make plays just because you feel like you have to make plays, dont make a re steal just because u know lilholdem does them and wins tournies, have a reason to make each play always be looking for spots, look into bet sizing and stack sizes it can be the smallest of reasons…. but have a reason., always look for weakness, and go with it, some things to look for….if the BB is crippled and someone makes a small raise, more than likely they only want the action of that player, also weakness can be making a bigger raise than the previous raise, to try and force people out. the biggest part of tournament poker is preflop action, the most successful players strengths are being able to determine if a raise appears to be weak or strong and acting on it, put urself in the other persons shoes, and what they are trying to accomplish with there raise, and why they made it a certain number and not another number, most players give it away what they
are tyring to do.
also, have a reason to rasie preflop, dont raise 55 becasue its a pair, or AJ because its a good hand.
sometimes it is correct to fold, you have to look at what can happen, before u raise, if you are folding to everyones shove, and cant play your hand for its value, then more than likely it is best to just fold it, there are other times where you can raise a weaker hand, just becasue the stack sizes dictate it, if there are several shortstacks, that u can call, then you can raise a wider range because you have showdown value….always look ahead at the possiblities before making any play.
and a quick update on myself…….runnning pretty bad in tournaments this last week, running pretty deep but just falling short of final tables and have taken a few days off here and there, overall i feel like i’m playing better than ever and recognizing more and more spots to gain chips…. look for scores to come,
gl at the tables
the rules of the game?

Hello
- Brian Hawkins | June 3, 2008
hi,my name is brian hawkins and i am 19 years old from florida…I’ve been playing poker for 2 years now i go by the screen names SNo0oWMAN (Pokerstars & Absolute poker), SN8WMAN (fulltilt) and WarrickDunn28 (Ultimatebet)
I will be one of the “chosen” ones blogging for you guys haha. I will be talking about mainly poker and maybe some stuff that happens in real life (as if i actually leave the house lol), i can talk some strategy as well and maybe some stuff i am trying to improve on to become a better player. you guys can also leave me some comments if you want me to talk about anything in particular.
i guess i will start off with some poker background info on myself, got started about 2 years ago, worked my way though the lower limits with 20$ SNGs and 5-20$ MTTs, didnt know how to get better at the time…went after the better players for advice, for ex. (gboro780, annette_15, westmenloAA)…probably a few others along the way that i am forgetting, i apologize..but you know who u are
i would say i asked a lot of questions but you can never experience every spot in poker, because no 2 situations are the same for the most part, it was more of picking up their mindset, and thinking like a poker player to analyze the situations that come up, i dont know how exactly happened, people say it just clicks and thats pretty much how it happened, all of the sudden i knew wat to do in the tough situations that come up in tournaments.
The only way to get better at this game is to “practice, practice, practice”, nothing replaces experience, and that holds true with just about anythting in life, you can read all the books and forums you want, but it wont sink in, unless you put the time in at the tables.
At almost every stage in my poker career, i thought i knew all there was to know about the game, because….the thing about poker is..if you dont know certain concepts, then you dont think they exist……therefore you think you know everything there is to know about the game.
That is why people will lose money and continue to play because they think they are profitable players, but they miss opportunities in tournaments and dont even realize it,
and when they bust out with AA to KK, all they do is chalk it up as a “cooler”, when they coulda still had chips left and still been in the tournament if they had recognized previous spots to pick up chips.
now a little about how its gone this year up till now…
I got this year off to a great start as many of you may know,In Janurary i won the 500$ sunday million on pokerstars for 278k.February was kind of a slow month but i then made up for it in march by taking 2nd in a live tournament here in florida for 50k and the same day as that live tourny
ended i proceeded to win the 100$ rebuy for 40k, was an amazing run.
April i made out pretty good as well…won a 320 on stars and had a few decent cashes on absolute.
May was another story though….was probably my worst month of my poker career thus far….coudlnt get anything going and also ran bad in some staking, the only positive coming out of may is the new car i bought, its a jeep SRT8, and its a pretty sick ride.
Hopefully june can prove to be a better month….started it off on a good note by winning a 12k world series package on sunday,(cant play in the tournament yet for a couple more years) but i will
gladly take the cash for it….also won a 12k package the day before by getting top 3 out of 460 in a 4k FPP(player points) sattelite.
anyways, just wanted to thank bluff for letting me share my thoughts and hopefully i can find ways to make my blog interesting, let me know what you guys think
thanks for reading!
